From 24 July to 31 July 2010 the Gandhi Foundation Summer Gathering took place at the St Christopher School, Letchworth Garden City, UK.
History of the Gandhi Summer Gathering
Each year for the last 26 years starting in 1985 the Gandhi Foundation has organised a Summer School (or Gathering), for members of the Gandhi Foundation (known as Friends) and also members of the public.
These Gatherings have been held in various venues, including the Abbey at Sutton Courtney, Oxfordshire, and the Eirene International Centre for Reconciliation and Peace at Clopton, Northamptonshire. In 2010, at St Christopher School Letchworth, there were approximately 25 participants, ranging in age from under ten to over seventy.
Purpose of the Gandhi Summer Gatherings
Mohandas K Gandhi (known as Mahatma Gandhi) established several ashrams in South Africa and in India as experiments in communal living. In these ashrams people lived in community as equals, sharing the chores between themselves.
The Gandhi Foundation is a UK-registered charity, that tries to raise awareness of the principles that Gandhi attempted to live by and to promote. The Gandhi Foundation also attempts to show the relevance of these ideas and principles to modern living. In the Summer Gathering, people have the opportunity to live in a short-term community, also all taking part in doing the cleaning and cooking.
Throughout the week workshops and seminars are held, to explore that year's theme. In 2010 the theme was 'Welfare and Responsibility'.
Gandhi Summer Gathering 2010 Programme
On Sunday 25 July the first seminar was given by Mark Hoda and David Maxwell, both members of the Executive Committee of the Gandhi Foundation. They presented information on Gandhi's life and work, and extracts from the book The Mind of Mahatma Gandhi edited by R. K. Prabhu and U. R. Rao (Navajivan Publishing Press, 2007) were used as the basis of what turned out to be a very lively discussion of his ideas.
