Gras Mardi Parade Schedule

What began as a commemoration and a demonstration for New York's Stonewall Riots in 1978, the Sydney Mardi Gras has grown from a protest march to a celebration of gay pride. Over the years it has attracted a growing number of participants who come from all over the world to be a part of the largest "must see, must do" event in the gay calendar. The event has reached iconic standards and thousands of tourists join the locals to witness the Parade.

From Christian Festival to Freedom of Expression

It is believed that Carnival (in Latin meaning farewell meat) or Mardi Gras (in French meaning fat Tuesday) has it's origins in the Christian festivities leading to the 40 day period of Lent. In history, it marked the day of debauchery and heavy feasting before giving up all indulgences during Lent. In Britain, it is known as Shrove Tuesday, while the rest of the world has caught on with the French term of Mardi Gras, making it not only a religious celebration, but a time to have fun and indulge in all things adventurous. Mardi Gras is no longer a one-day celebration, but invites theists and atheists alike to support the freedom of expression.
